ALGOLIT
Welcome to the website of the ALGOLIT project — Understanding and boosting algorithmic literacy — funded by the MIUR PRIN 2022 programme.
The project is a collaboration between the University of Trento, Prof. Giuseppe A. Veltri (Department of Sociology and Social Research), and the University of Milan, Prof. Flaminio Squazzoni (Department of Social and Political Sciences).
ALGOLIT aims to explore the socio-cognitive determinants of algorithmic literacy and its consequences on individual cognition and behaviour in digital environments, developing empirically testable concepts and measurements. The project is structured across four work packages: a systematic literature review, a qualitative study of folk theories about algorithms, online experiments on algorithmic awareness, and a representative survey of the Italian population.
On this site you will find information about the project, the research team, scientific publications, and project materials.

Work Packages
WP1: Literature Review
Systematic review of algorithmic literacy concepts, measurements, socio-cognitive determinants, and behavioural correlates.
WP2: Folk Theories
Qualitative study mapping citizens’ lay theories about algorithms, their functioning, and perceived impact on daily life.
WP3: Experiments
Online experiments investigating algorithmic literacy, awareness, and behavioural effects in simulated digital environments.
WP4: Population Survey
Representative survey of the Italian population testing measurements and determinants of algorithmic literacy.
